Idiocracy

Sometimes I run across a term that captures something so perfectly I must note it as part of the wordwork, even while beginning to mourn the fact that it will pass into obscurity.

The word "Idiocracy" is a legitimate word (see this definition) that has a mundane definition related to idiosyncrasy. The meaning I like is derived from the  sci-fi film, Idiocracy, which chronicles the supremeacy of mediocrity in life 500 years from now. I came across the word in this  Los Angeles Times article titled:  Daum: Invasion of the idiocrats.

We are living in a day where our political democracy is being twisted by the Tea Party and others toward an idiocracy in the satiric sense of the word. Angry idiots, idiots with degrees, racist idiots, greedy idiots -- and they seem to love politics where idiocracy adds meaningless noise and drama to a tragedy of failing civilization.

Love the word -- hate the pain it means for this country.
